Being Human
People assume that fitness trainers wake up everyday excited about working out-ok, most of us. Here is why I might feel excited today: 1: It is Monday and the gym is pretty crowded, filled with the energy to get back on track from the weekend rest time. That means group fitness and clients will listen to whatever I have planned and grunt through every rep! 2: I get to sample some of the programming for my own training, which is stressful since I change it a lot (even five minutes before! Here’s hoping it works for them)! But, all that sampling is stressful on my body. I don’t get a full workout in and yet still feel the extra load it puts on my body before I get in front of a class or client. I know; #trainerproblems! If I don’t get some physical work in for myself, I feel the pressure of being able to perform a certain way or worse, look a certain way to be a role model to motivate my clients. It is a struggle to balance self love, performance and energy.
Today, this Monday wasn’t like 1 & 2 above. Why? 1: I didn’t want to jump out of bed with excitement, I wanted to push snooze a third time and cancel on my client at 5:45am. But, that means I would be groggy for my other classes and clients for the rest of the day-guilt and pressure. 2: I wasn’t excited for what I had planned because I haven’t sampled it enough to make sure I had enough options depending on how they felt. And 3 (yep, I get to add a 3rd): If I don’t show up, I won’t find time to do a little training for myself. So, I did NOT push snooze a third time, I rolled over, took three deep breaths as I rolled my ankles off the side of my bed (as my man is sound asleep next to me), got out of bed and started my routine. I showed up to my first client and had a great workout. Zipped off to class to coach a grueling CrossFit “HERO WOD”-known as the toughest workouts named after fallen soldiers. The class needed it, I needed it too-and I continued with more private training sessions that were modified with my guidance and coaching. I feel better, I did it! Now, I get to do my own training and I am more motivated and energized knowing that my mindset has changed from the start. I think the most appropriate term for these days is “Monday-itis” and it will also land on a Wednesday and maybe even more so on a Friday!
You may ask, what did I do for my own training today? Knowing I have a heavy week ahead of lifting classes, I stayed away from any HERO WODs (would have loved to it since it has Kettlebell swings as the first movement), so I modified my workout with 21-15-12-9-6 of Kettlebell swings and pull-ups. I added a few down-dog to planks for mobility and breath, turned on yoga tunes to tune into my breath and finished my “Monday-itis” training. Got it done. I speak from my heart. I hope this motivates you on your Monday, Wednesday or even Sunday afternoon.
Remember, life gets in the way, so forgive it. Just stay consistent, feel your body, feed your body and listen to your body.
